Don't care about Green St. and Big Shoe U but want somebody to pull for?

Disappointed cause all your final four picks lost in the first round last year?

No time (or skillz) to make good picks on every game?

Not good with deadlines for turning your picks in?

Got a hankering to talk smack but your team isn't giving you much to work with?

Then this is the pool for you... a completely random pool to give your Match Madness some meaning with zero time or thought investment.

But if you're looking for a sure thing... look elsewhere, your picks are randomly generated for you. Many will play but few will win. However, having someone to pull for will likely make each game more fun.

How it works

  • Unlike a normal bracket pool where each person picks a team to win each game, you are assigned a random pick for each game that is either 'favorite wins' or 'underdog wins' (with favorite determined by seeds). All picks have about the same amount of upsets.
  • Each game has two point values, one for if the favorite wins and one for if the underdog wins. Once the winner is known, the value is either added to or subtracted from your score depending on your pick. For instance, when a number 8 seed plays a number 9 seed, the favorite wins point value is 10 and the underdog wins point value is 15. If the favorite wins and your pick was correct, you would get 10 points. If the underdog wins, and your pick was favorite, you would lose 15 points.
  • The game values are based on the difference in the seeds of the teams playing. For instance, a number 1 seeded team loosing to a number 16 seeded team is worth a lot but a number 2 beating a number 13 is worth little. This evens things up a bit if you happen to get a pick for an upset between two vastly different seeded teams.
  • Each round has a round multiplier that helps keep all participants in the running till the end. In this pool, it ain't over till the fat lady sings.
  • Because the picks are randomly generated, new entries can be accepted even after some games have been played.
  • The pool automatically calculates the game values, your current score, and your expected score given all future games are won by the favorite. You win by getting the highest score. If you are mathematically eliminated from the top spot, second place goes to the lowest score. This keeps more people in the running for longer.
  • You can start a private pool just for your friends or join one of our public free pools.

FAQ

  • How are the picks generated? The favorite/upset picks are randomly generated for each round with a probably of upset that is loosely based on historical results (round 1- 25%, round 2 - 30%, round 3 - 35%, round 4 - 40%, round 5 - 45%, round 6 - 50%). All picks have about the same amount of upsets for the lower rounds.
  • Where can I see the game values? As soon as the teams for a game are established, the bracket will show the game values. The ultimate value will be the value shown next to the team that wins. If your pick is correct, you will gain that many points. Otherwise, you lose that many points.
  • What if the two teams have the same seed? It's possible two teams (from different regions) will play each other and have the same seed. In these cases, it's hard to say who the favorite is. Perhaps you could use AP rankings or some other sensible metric. However, for this pool, the "favorite" between two equally seeded teams is the top team listed in the bracket. It's not perfect but it turns out that it doesn't matter much because the game value will be the same regardless of who wins. Since your pick was random in the first place, we just need an easy rule so you know who to cheer for.
